Welcome

I have been making woodblock prints at my workshop in Lyme, NH since 1993 using the traditional Japanese hanga method. This is color woodblock printing using multiple blocks, one for each color. Water, highest quality artist pigments and rice paste are my printing materials. Brushes and a hand-held baren are my printing tools.

Here I am using my baren. Each Matt Brown print is hand-rubbed, often from 10 or more separate carved blocks.

Images of the prints can be found sorted thematically in the Gallery.

There has been a lot of printing (and framing and shipping and selling prints) these last few months leading up to Christmas. Now it is time to clean up and organize, and this incudes getting this web-site to work better. If you notice something isn't working well I would love to hear from you about this.
