The Story of Opus

"Heavenly Day", 5" x 7", from 1996

Below are images of Opus (mostly up on Lake Champlain), our Cape Dory Typhoon. This is an earlier example of the type built in 1973, with all the extras and nicely outfitted. Evidently it is a boat that Carl Alberg (designer of the Cape Dory line of sailboats as well as many others) himself knew back in the days when Opus lived on Long Island Sound. Opus came into our family in the Fall of 2007. We were at first as much taken by Opus's beautiful berth at the Charlotte Sailing Center as in the boat itself. Since that fall Opus has been on Post Pond in Lyme, NH, Lake Winnipesaukee, and the Gulf of Maine at East Boothbay, but mostly has enjoyed the water of Lake Champlain.

You can make out the piers of the Essex-Charlotte Ferry dock on the right, and the Adirondacks in the distance across the Lake.

Bils and Opus   DadNancyon Opus
The two Bill Brasch's and Opus before launching in June of 2009. Later that day we got into some of the most challenging wind and waves we have ever dealt with on Opus. We let Nathaniel deal with the helm. No other boats were out and we were heavily reeefed. Nathaniel did a great job negotiating our course back to the Sailing Center, where we were greeted with cheers from folks watching us get soaked as we dealt with the challenge from the Center's second story balcony. It was a great start to a fine season.

Opus tied up at a dock on the Otter Creek for the night. It is a late October evening; you can see Skippy our dinghy at the end of the dock. In the moring there was a heavy frost all over the boat and the dock which was entirely gone by 10 o'clock.
